Why We Recommend SpreadEx

In our spread betting app tests, SpreadEx’s mobile app scored a perfect 10/10. It was the advanced charting tools and real-time news feed that really impressed us, giving accurate and powerful analysis on the go. SpreadEx also excelled across a range of other categories, including trading experience – overall, we gave SpreadEx 96/100.

64% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with this provider.

Pros & Cons

  • User-friendly mobile app with advanced charting
  • Excellent choice of 11,000 markets
  • Low variable spreads from 0.90 pips

  • Limited choice of mobile trading apps
  • No demo account
  • Few educational resources

Broker Details

SpreadEx’s strong performance in our tests was driven mainly by its available trading platforms – TradingView and the SpreadEx mobile app. It was this proprietary platform that impressed us the most, giving us everything we needed to carry out comprehensive market analysis via our mobile devices.

Best Spread Betting App - Spreadex

With fluid navigation, and intuitive touch controls, this gave us an excellent trading experience during testing.

The interface was highly responsive as we swiped between markets, selected charting tools, and deployed technical analysis. We found more than 35 technical indicators on the app, supporting strong in-depth analysis wherever you are.

The app is just part of the wider SpreadEx experience. Overall, we gave this experience a score of 96/100 after testing, which puts it in second place of all the brokers we looked at.

Range of markets was a real stand-out feature here. A seriously impressive 10,000 financial spread betting markets was better than most of the other brokers we tested, and achieved a 10/10 rating. You’ve got things like forex, commodities, shares, indices, bonds, ETFs, and options. Only IG Markets provides more.

Trading costs are always a major focus for us in testing, and SpreadEx did very well here too. We gave the broker 9/10, after strong performances on the nine forex pairs we tested. The spread for the EUR/USD pair was particularly impressive at just 0.90 pips – significantly lower than the 1.12 average across the 16 brokers in our study.

SpreadEX offered highly competitive spreads on the other pairs we tested too, as you can see in our table below.

Why We Recommend Pepperstone

The Pepperstone app is the best choice for low-cost spread betting, achieving 10/10 in our spread bet and trading cost analysis. This was far from the only perfect score we awarded Pepperstone – the trading platform compatibility score was another 10/10. The broker’s supported TradingView, MetaTrader 4, MT5, and cTrader all offer excellent mobile apps.

Pros & Cons

  • Most spread betting apps available
  • Fastest execution speeds
  • The best range of apps available
  • Doesn’t offer guaranteed stop-loss orders
  • Demo account expires after 60 days
  • Limited e-wallet options

UK spread betting broker awardThe overall score we awarded to Pepperstone was 98/100, thanks to its incredible performance across a number of key areas. This actually makes it our best spread betting provider overall. The trading costs we uncovered were a big part of this score.

The lowest spreads we found were on the EUR/USD forex pair, where we discovered an average spread of 0.80 pips, comfortably below the industry standard of 1.12 pips. With this spread, you would be saving 0.32 pips per trade – this may not sound like a huge amount, but trust us when we say it adds up over time.

Take a look at how Pepperstone stacks up across some of the major forex pairs we tested, and other currency pairs.

Pepperstone also performed very well in terms of stock spread betting. We found that spread bets on UK shares began at just 4 points, while US stocks such as Apple could cost as little as 10%.

None of the other brokers we tested could match this, really underlying Pepperstone’s status as a leading spread betting platform.

Our list is aimed at helping you find the best mobile trading apps, and Pepperstone really excelled here too. With the MT4, MT5, cTrader and Trading view all supported, you’ve got four of the best desktop and mobile app trading experiences available in the market.

One of SpreadBet’s co-founders Noam Korbl gave his own recommendation for a spread betting trading platform:

“For me personally, I feel TradingView offers some of the best features for spread betting,” Noam said.

“The ability to sync charts across devices is going to be particularly valuable for mobile traders, and not all platforms offer this.”

The last point we really need to raise here is Pepperstone’s execution speeds. This is important for you as a trader, as it’s going to help you execute your trading ideas with more accuracy and protect against slippage.

We gave Pepperstone 10/10, thanks to its average of 77ms for limit orders and 100ms for market execution – the fastest among all brokers tested.

Why We Recommend OANDA

We choose OANDA as our best spread betting app for beginners largely thanks to its ultra-low stakes. You can start spread betting with stake sizes as low as £0.01p. There’s also a guaranteed stop-loss order, which is going to be really useful for you as a beginner trader.

Overall, OANDA scored 91/100 in our tests, performing particularly well on average spreads and ease-of-use

76.6% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with this provider.

Pros & Cons

  • Beginner-friendly trading app
  • Low stake sizes from 1p per point
  • No minimum deposit required
  • Not the largest range of markets
  • Cannot spread bet shares
  • Customer support is only available during market hours

Broker Details

In our tests, the OANDA Trade spread betting app came out top for new traders. It was the low stakes that impressed us – you’ll be able to spread bet with stakes starting from only £0.01p, which was the lowest of any of the brokers we looked at.

This is going to make it much easier for you to move from the broker’s demo account to live trading. Most of the brokers we tested have minimum stakes of between £0.50p and £1, which will significantly increase your risk.

OANDA’s lower stakes will help you get a feel for real money trading, while minimising the financial impact of potential mistakes.

One of the best features we found on OANDA Trade is the guaranteed stop-loss order. This tool lets you set a precise exit point for your bets, limiting your potential losses. For you as a beginner trader, this will offer additional protection and peace of mind, as you know that market volatility won’t impact your maximum potential loss.

The lack of TradingView charts on the OANDA app is a bit of a let down for us. You do have more than 40 analysis tools on OANDA Trade, with things like pivot point indicators to keep track of market movements – but we feel that the TradingView charts are a little more insightful.

Indicators on OANDA Trade App

Across our spread tests, OANDA performed consistently well. While Pepperstone outperformed OANDA in most cases, we still gave this broker 9/10 – thanks in part to the average 1 pip spread on the EUR/USD pair.

This is going to help you keep your costs low, and make sure you keep more of your profit. Take a look at OANDA’s spread testing results below.

Why We Recommend CMC Markets

We found that CMC Markets’ NextGen app was the best for professional traders, thanks to advanced features like sentiment analysis tools. You won’t get all of the NextGen features on the mobile version, but you will get up to 40% savings on spreads with CMC’s Alpha program. Overall, we gave this broker a score of 62/100.

69% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with this provider.

Pros & Cons

  • Advanced NGEN trading app
  • Exceptional discounts for professionals with Alpha program
  • Access to in-house professional analysis services
  • Limited customer support with no live chat
  • Higher trading costs outside the Alpha program
  • Not many eWallet deposit options

Broker Details

If you’re one of the UK’s professional traders, you need an app with robust spread betting features. Our testing suggests that the NextGen app provides this.

We found more than 60+ indicators on the NextGen mobile app, such as the VWAP (volume-weighted average price) and other advanced indicators not commonly found on other platforms.

Another feature we found exceptional was the sentiment analysis tool. With this tool, you’ll use CMC’s client data to discover where other traders are placing their bets.

Two slight downsides to CMC’s NextGen app, from a professional point of view, were the lack of automated pattern recognition tools, and no support for crypto spread betting.

You’ll find the automated pattern recognition tool on the web version of NextGen, but it’s missing from the mobile app. As for crypto, the FCA only permits professional traders to open spread bets on cryptocurrencies, but if you want to take advantage of this, you can’t do so with NextGen.

However, we did find that CMC Markets’ Alpha program makes up for these slight deficiencies. If you qualify for the program, you could achieve a discount of up to 40% on your spread betting costs, which is a serious advantage for an active professional trader.

We can’t stress enough how substantial this discount is. If you were trading the EUR/USD pair, you’d be getting a spread of 0.30 pips – well below the industry average of 1.12 pips. Discover more about these pip discounts in our table below.

Discounted Spreads with Alpha Program on CMC Markets

Finally, CMC’s range of markets. You’ve got 12,000 markets to spread bet on here, which lands CMC Markets a score of 9/10 in this category.

Why We Recommend IG Markets

It’s the incredible range of markets that stood out to us about IG Markets. The broker scored 86/100 overall after our tests, but its range of 17,000 markets was the best on our list. You can use MetaTrader 4 or ProRealTime to trade on IG Markets, or use the broker’s own IG Trading App.

The proprietary app is a good choice in our opinion, with excellent charting tools and an intuitive interface.

70% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with this provider.

Pros & Cons

  • Over 17,000 markets to spread bet
  • Multiple spread betting apps
  • Excellent research and educational resources
  • No spread betting on shares, futures, or option markets with MT4
  • Customer support may be slow
  • Requires a minimum deposit of £250

Broker Details

In our testing, IG Markets emerged with the broadest market range of any of the apps on our list – more than 17,000. Only SpreadEx and CMC came close to this, but couldn’t match IG’s 10/10 score.

Range of Markets on IG App

The markets you’ll be able to access on your spread betting account include forex, indices, shares, bonds, commodities, ETFs, interest rates, and options.

We really liked that IG offers forward and future markets – the spreads on these markets are wider than if you were spread betting forex, but there are no overnight fees, so you can manage your costs on longer-term trades.

You’ve got several different apps to choose from when you trade with IG. This includes old favourites like MetaTrader 4, less widely used apps like ProRealTime, and IG’s own proprietary platform.

While you’ll get a solid range of markets on all of these, we found that only the IG Trading app gives you access to all 17,000+.

We were very impressed with this IG Trading app. In the past, we’ve looked at IG’s desktop version, and we were pleased to see that all the desktop features were available on the mobile version. So you’ll still benefit from the Signal Centre, with its trading signals and professional market commentary, when you trade on your hand-held device.

Why We Recommend City Index

We singled out City Index as one of the best apps for trading on iOS devices. Across the trading costs, market range and trading experience tests, the broker achieved a strong 82/100 rating overall. The City Index mobile app performed exceptionally well, with its TradingView advanced charting features and mobile-friendly SMART trading signals across more than 8,500 markets.

70% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with this provider.

Pros & Cons

  • Feature-rich iOS trading platform
  • Competitive spreads starting at 1.1 pips
  • Free real-time performance analytics tool
  • No third-party apps for spread betting
  • Not all markets are available for spread betting
  • Demo account is limited

Broker Details

The City Index Mobile App is our standout performer on the iOS operating system, and a good performer overall, earning 8/10 in our trading platform tests. We’ve often found that mobile apps suffer in comparison to desktop platforms in terms of features, but this isn’t the case for City Index.

For instance, you’ll be able to use TradingView charts on the mobile app – one of the best charting solutions available on iOS in our opinion. This puts more than 60 indicators and drawing tools at your fingertips, giving you everything you need to analyse the markets while you’re on the move.

In fact, we found the City Index app went far beyond this. It also supports SMART signals, drawing upon real-time market data to give you actionable alerts on potential trading opportunities, direct to your mobile.

Elsewhere in our tests, we found City Index performed fairly well in terms of trading costs. Here’s what our senior analyst had to say about his spread test results:

“The 1.1 pip spread I found on the EUR/USD is a little under the industry average, which is certainly a good thing,” he said.

“This was reflected across most of the other pairs I examined. City Index eventually achieved fifth place for trading costs, out of the 16 brokers I tested.”

Why We Recommend FXCM

As we examined FXCM, we found that it had one of the best ranges of spread betting apps available, including the MetaTrader 4 and Trading Station mobile apps. However, FXCM scored only 6/10 on our platform test, as some of the apps are a little limited.

Overall, FXCM scored 64/100 – the excellent trading conditions and customer service really gave FXCM a boost in our tests.

Pros & Cons

  • Decent selection of mobile app platforms
  • Advanced trading tools for automation and technical analysis
  • Lower trading costs with Active Trader program
  • The range of markets is limited
  • Mobile app features are limited compared to desktop
  • No Capitalise.ai on mobile
  • Minimum deposit required
  • Fewer educational resources compared to competitors

Broker Details

It’s the range of spread betting apps that gives FXCM a place on our list. You’ll be able to trade on apps like MetaTrader 4 and Trading Station, on either iOS or Android.

Trading Station is a very strong option in our view. You’ll find more than 60 indicators here. Tools like RSI, MACD, and Bollinger Bands, give you comprehensive technical analysis even when you are out and about.

Trading Station Mobile App

With Trading Station, you’ll get access to FXCM’s full market range. We can’t say the same for MT4 unfortunately, so Trading Station is our top choice here.

There are other features missing from both of these third-party apps. You won’t be able to use Capitalise.ai to automate your trades, nor will you be able to use MT4’s famous Expert Advisors or custom indicators on the mobile version.

FXCM’s market range wasn’t as extensive as some of the other brokers we tested, but you’ve still got 450+ instruments, including 350+ shares and 41+ currency pairs. This is a respectable selection in our opinion, but you might want to consider SpreadEx or IG Markets if you want more choice.

In our trading cost testing, we found that FXCM offers an average of 1 pip on the EUR/USD pair – slightly better than the industry average of 1.12 pips. While this is not bad, FXCM couldn’t replicate this form across the eight other pairs we tested, resulting in a 5/10 score.

Why We Recommend AvaTrade

We like AvaTrade because of its support for the MetaTrader 4 mobile app. This is one of the better apps out there, with some advanced charting options. You’ll find AvaTrade’s fixed spreads on MT4, which start at 0.90 pips and tend to be competitive on major forex pairs, although the share and commodity spreads are less impressive.

AvaTrade only scored 48/100 overall in our tests, due to its market range and sometimes high costs. While we do think AvaTrade is a good choice for MT4 mobile spread betting, Pepperstone offers better spreads and more mobile options.

Pros & Cons

  • Fixed spreads for stable pricing
  • Support for the MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 apps
  • Strong third-party technical analysis tools
  • Not directly regulated by the FCA
  • Inactivity fees are applied
  • Spreads are wider for non-major markets

Broker Details

AvaTrade gives you access to one of our favourite spread betting apps – MetaTrader 4. The intuitive navigation, advanced charting tools, and real-time quotes, make this a strong option.

However, the Expert Advisors and custom indicators that make MT4 such a joy to use are not available on the mobile app.

MT4 app on AvaTrade

This is a bit disappointing in our view, but AvaTrade’s push notification price alerts make up for this a little. These alerts are an effective way to stay up-to-date on market movements.

AvaTrade is the only broker on this list that offers fixed spreads. While fixed spreads are not usually the cheapest, they still provide you with more reliability, particularly in high-volatility markets.

Actually, AvaTrade’s own fixed spreads aren’t too bad. The 0.90 pip spread on the EUR/USD pair, for example, is highly competitive, and is close to the price offered by variable spread brokers like SpreadEx and IG.

We did find, however, that some of the other currency pair spreads were a little wider. This might not be ideal if you’re looking for consistently low trading costs across a range of different pairs. We could only give AvaTrade 3/10 in our trading cost tests.
